"5 days before the start of march and I have travelled to Firebrand’s training centre in Germany. I wore my step counter throughout the journey and through the course introduction and first module. It recorded 8223 steps. I guess this is to be expected as I spent most of the day walking around airports. Although it is not part of the challenge I do want to see if I can have a 10000-step day while I am teaching a course.
The picture is of my step counter that I will be using throughout the challenge."
1st March 2019 – Morning
I have reset my step counter and am ready to go. I am in Germany delivering an AWSAP course so I will have to fit my steps around my teaching. It is surprising how few steps I do in a day when I am in the classroom. Most of my delivery is stood in front of a white board or sat doing demos. Not a lot of walking.
How far does 10000 steps take you?
Most sources say that 10000 steps equal about 5 miles. For me it will be less, i think that I will be walking between 3.5 and 4 miles a day.
How long does it take to walk 10000 steps?
I am averaging 10mins for 1000 steps so 10000 will take around 1 hour and 40 minutes. That doesn’t seem like a lot of time but that is on the flat and Yorkshire (where I will be doing most of my walking) is very hilly. I think that I will have to put aside 2 – 2.5 hours every day to make sure I get my steps.
1st March 12:30
3048 steps done. A lot of walking left to do this afternoon.
DAY 1 DONE!
And I have to say I enjoyed it, I might not feel that way in 30 days time but right now I’m having a good time.
I must remember to carry my step counter with me at all times.
Lund Park is the park opposite our house, 1 circuit is half a mile and for me around 1500 steps.
Today I walked every path in the park.
I think the secret of success for me will be to do at least 3000 steps on a morning walk and
make sure I have no more than 3000 steps to do on my evening walk.
10 Days down!
10 days in and over 100000 steps. I am feeling good, but the steps
are starting to take their toll. Some days I walk for 2hrs and do all my steps in one go but
most of the time I am doing them in 3 or 4 thousand step chunks. The weather isn’t helping, it
is wet and muddy here in Yorkshire. At the weekend I walked to Bronte bridge with my brother and
Inca, it is a walk with a round trip of about 3 miles. It was windy and rainy on the way there and we got
caught in a halestorm on our way back. We were wet and tired but also thrilled to have done it.
Over Half way!
16 days in and over 160000 steps. Some days are easier than others,
last Thursday for example I could have walked and walked but had to get back home to drop Inca
off for the dog walker. Other days I don’t want to walk at all. It doesn’t help that it has rained
every day of the month so far. Yesterday by the end of my walk my boots were full of water, my fleece was
weigh down with water and even Inca had a look that suggested
that she would be happy to spend the rest of the day by the fire.
15 more days to go.
Almost There
Less than a week to go now, I have had a few good days out walking. Last Friday I went to Lotherton Hall Bird Gardens with my sister and niece, then on Saturday I walked 20000 steps! Yesterday was my easiest day of walking. Got up, walked round the park and before I knew it, I was on 8000 steps.
It is almost time to reflect on the month and look back what I’ve done. I am tired but it really helps that it hasn’t rained for a few days. The rain was really getting me down, it is amazing how quickly my mood has changed after just a couple of days of dry weather.
I will have one more push for sponsorship at the end of the week, it would be amazing to get to £800.
